In class, we watched a video concerning food waste in American industry and the misuse and misinterpretation of sell-by dates. We found out that the dates were inaccurate and that the foods and drinks could still be consumed past the labeled dates. The wasted groceries could still be sold a week or so past it’s expiration date or even be given to the homeless, but authorities refuse to do so out of fear of the health hazards it may reap. However, according to an experimental study, those who consumed milk a week past it’s sell-by date stated that they were completely healthy, deeming the milk to be safe.
Changes should be made so that the labels could be more accurate or that the wasted food could still be sold or even given to the poor. Food waste doesn’t benefit anybody, but it could be prevented.
